Camp CAM: Theater Counselor

JOB SUMMARY: With learning and public access at the heart of its work, the Castellani Art Museum (CAM) seeks a Theater Teacher to facilitate, implement, and oversee its Camp CAM theater program. In keeping with Niagara University's Vincentian values, the CAM serves the diverse racial, ethnic, and religious communities of the Buffalo-Niagara region through exhibitions and programs which honor and explore artistic traditions and contemporary artworks. Camp CAM seeks an experienced Theater Teacher for our summer program combining theater and visual arts education. The position involves teaching two age groups (5-8 and 9-12 years), with each group spending half their day in theater instruction and half in art/museum activities. Working alongside Camp Director and Art Teacher, you'll plan and direct weekly showcase performances while creating an engaging, supportive environment for young performers.
The Theater Teacher will plan and direct weekly themed showcase performances while leading age-appropriate theater exercises and activities. You will manage classroom dynamics, maintain behavioral standards, and ensure participant safety during all theater activities. This role reports directly to the Camp Director and requires close collaboration with camp staff to maintain program cohesion.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
- Oversee two groups of 20 campers
- Guide children through activities, assist with art instruction, and manage behavior issues. Alert Camp Director of any issues that arise
- Move campers from activity to activity and lead morning warm up activities and end-of-day closing activities.
- Oversee daily check-in and check-out for campers, supervise children during lunch time, and distribute snacks during break
- Ensure the safety of the children and the artworks in the Museum.
REQUIRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES: Theater and Arts Background: Possess a strong background and knowledge in theater, with the ability to introduce key concepts of theater to children in an engaging and educational manner.
Child Engagement: Ability to welcome and engage children aged 6-12 in a warm, fun-filled setting, fostering a positive and inclusive environment for learning and creativity.
Instructional Abilities: Capable of guiding children through activities, assisting with art instruction, and managing behavior issues with a focus on creating a constructive and enriching experience.
Communication Skills: Clearly communicate with campers, Junior Counselors, and other staff members, providing updates on activities, addressing issues promptly, and reporting to the Camp Director as needed.
Supervisory Skills: Demonstrate effective supervisory skills to oversee two groups of 20 campers, ensuring their safety and well-being throughout the camp activities, demonstrating strong organizational and time management skills.
Safety Awareness: Prioritize and ensure the safety of children and artworks within the Museum, adhering to safety protocols and promptly addressing any safety concerns. Ability to handle unexpected issues or emergencies calmly and effectively, taking appropriate actions and involving necessary parties when required.
Preferred Qualifications: The ideal candidate will bring proven experience teaching and directing children's theater for ages 5-12, with strong classroom management and communication skills necessary to adapt teaching methods across age groups and lead engaging theatrical activities. We seek applicants with a Bachelor's degree in Theater, Education, or related field, previous summer camp experience, and background in creative dramatics, theater games, and technical elements (props, costumes, stage management), while musical theater experience is a plus. Physical requirements include the ability to move equipment, demonstrate theatrical movements, and actively engage with children in both indoor and outdoor settings at CAM.
Schedule & Compensation: The position runs July 14 - August 15, 2025 (5 weeks), Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM. Hourly rate is based on experience with a range of $20-$25/hr.

Camp CAM: Camp Counselor

In keeping with Niagara University's Vincentian values, the CAM serves the diverse racial, ethnic, and religious communities of the Buffalo-Niagara region through exhibitions and programs that honor and explore artistic traditions and contemporary artworks. A Camp CAM Counselor welcomes children from across the region, introducing them to key concepts of theater in a warm, fun-filled setting. Under the supervision of the Camp Director, the Counselors of Camp CAM oversee the Junior Counselors (teens that support our campers) and campers for CAM's five-week summer camp for children ages 5-12.
Camp CAM focuses on the visual and performing arts, dividing its time between these two disciplines and exploring different thematic angles each week of camp. Each week includes a visual art component and theater component. The visual art component includes a daily visual art project created by the Theater Teacher that interprets the week's theme. Each week includes a theater component, consisting of daily theater exercises that work towards collaborative Theatrical Performances on Fridays. This position is critical to the workings of the camp and is further assisted with Junior Counselors, who work one-to-one with students on projects.
The ideal person for this role has a friendly, outgoing personality, is able to multitask, and remains calm and flexible in face of unforeseen challenges.
